William C. Swails was born about 1831 in Juniata Co., Pa.
William was married to Abigail, the daughter of Isaac and Margaret Swailes. It is assumed
that William C. was a cousin of Abigail. Marriage
between cousins was not uncommon for that time period.

From the August 13,1862 issue of the Lewistown Gazette it is reported
"Among the patients on board different vessels which have come down
the James River we notice the following from the 49th regiment", a list of
many men follow including, William C. Swails company I.
William died in a military hospital in Philadelphia, Pa. in Sep 1862.
Civil War enrollment, mustered in 24 Oct. 1861- VA Comp 1 49th Reg.
