Luther, known as Roy, was born 10, May in Juniata County, Pennsylvania to William and
Henrietta "Jane" Bogenrief Colyer. He married Carrie Ruth Swails on 12, November 1912 in Mifflinburg,
Union County, Pa.
The census records indicate he finished the eighth grade.
The 1910 Census, Juniata, Thompsontown, 16 year old Roy Colyer is listed as typesetter, newspaper.
In 1920 his occupation is listed as fireman.
In 1930 he is a tinner working for E. H. Hoyer.
By 1940 he is listed as "working on his own accord" as a tinner
He was a roofer and installed furnaces and did plumbing work.
He attended church regularly and taught a men's Sunday school class. He held different positions in church over the years.
One time he made a large daffodil for the children to through to the stage for their Easter program. Some sort of mishap
occurred and the children got stuck and had to be rescued. No one was injured.
He built a house for his family in the Garden View area of Williamsport. There is a bump-out in the dining room of the
house with three windows where Grandma kept her plants. The bump-out was not original to the house. The story was learned
by a granddaughter when her family moved to a new neighborhood. As she and her mother were talking to an elderly woman next
door it became apparent that the woman was from the Garden View area. She related that it was her that had crashed into
the Colyer's dining room when her husband was teaching her to drive. She said,"I thought, oh no! This is going to be just
like in the movies!" Well with a growing family Grandma probably appreciated the extra space that Grampa added when he
repaired the house.
One time the Colyer children were told that Grampa was going to build a merry-go-round for them. They excitedly told every-
one and were met with jeers and disbelief. The worst of the taunters showed up when it came to be and asked, "Can we ride?
We brought you a bag of apples." The apples were rotten.
He died January 1975 and is interred in The Montoursville Cemetery next to his wife and some of his children.
